Sorry for not getting back on here earlier. Most people wont of heard of the Townley family with their ancestral home dating back to the 1200s which is open to visitors in lancashire. I found out recently that I am related to them in the 1400s and some of their names have the "de" I mentioned. . So I am guessing from your reply wisechild that this would mean for eg John "born of " Holden. Thank You all. |

For Spanish names it usually indicates the mother´s surname. |
