Hello David, if you don't mind giving an example of someone you're looking for we might be able to give you some more specific pointers.

There's an example page from a WW1 war deaths register online at:

Not particularly informative, I'ld say. Since it's at SP, it's just Scottish soldiers, but if it had some English soldier who attested at, say, Berwick, his entry wouldn't be any different.

GB wasn't quite accurate: FMP has the indexes - the records themselves are held by the GRO

What if the Death Occurs Abroad?
You should register the death according to local regulations in the country concerned and obtain a certificate of death. You MAY also be able to register the death with the British Consul in that country for a fee. However, there is no obligation to do so.

I capitalized MAY - it depends on where the death occured - E.g.,
France, India, USA - you can
Australia, Canada, Ireland - you can't

Actually, the overwhelming majority of non-military foreign death records are not deposited with the GRO.

FMP have these records

British nationals died overseas 1818-2005
British nationals armed forces deaths 1796-2005
British nationals died at sea 1854-1890
Maritime deaths 1794-1964

I am looking for information on how to obtain death records of Brits who died overseas, also do World War One deaths have death certificates? :-)
