Sue - Since you have highish #s, I'm assuming this is the N end near Tufnell Pk tube.

Go to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ and do a search for Brecknock Road, then select the N-19 end. You'll get taken to an URL that begins with:
www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?x=529272&y=185686 etc

This URL embeds to location of the arrowhead by its OS coordinates: 529272,185686
Actually, since the road isn't true N-S, I changed these to 100 metres to E, and 16 m to S, namely: 529372,185670

Now go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html and enter the amended coordinates, then select various old maps.

The oldest map is 1850-1 - it's just a road map, and shows no houses (but it's clear they exist on the S edge from the way the roads are laid out) - It does show Brecknock Rd was called Maiden Lane back then.

The 1871-2 map shows houses on both sides of Brecknock up to Anson, with 5 houses beyond Anson, but short of Corinne (which doesn't yet exist) on the NE side. 1873 map is same (it might not be a seperate survey).

1895 map - houses everywhere.

Going back to my comment about my local High Street.

Back in the early 1800's part of this street was not called High St.

I did a lot of research for a shop that had been established in 1893. In 1901 it was at no. 51 and in 1911 at no 36.

Would not have known about the name change or renumbering if I had not taken the time to visit my local library. Or that a couple of properties were demolished at the end due to a road widening scheme.

LadyKira Report 29 Mar 2013 00:12

In 1888 the General Post Office and London County Council conducted a renaming and renumbering scheme to eliminate duplicate road names throughout the LCC and to renumber houses consistently with the lowest number being closest to the local post office. This means that a house located in 1851 need not be the same house today, or even in subsequent censuses.

There are dozensof entries in the Electoral Roles. eg

London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965
about Peter Poulton
Name: Peter Poulton
Year: 1891
County or Borough: Islington
Ward or Division/Constituency: Islington North
Street Address: 212 Brecknock road

At a quick look this is the earliest I can see, but should be possoble to find most years up to 1965.

NanaSue ................

the fact that the houses have not themselves changed very much since they were built, has nothing to do with the fact that the houses may have been re-numbered

............. or even that the street itself might have been re-named.

That is what we are all trying to tell you.

CupCakes

CupCakes Report 28 Mar 2013 23:41

Choccy thank you so much - very interesting.

Also all the comments - I understand what you mean about renumbering it is just that most of the houses locally haven't changed since they were built. - few bombs during the wars but replacements have the same numbers or some council estates were built on the bombed out areas and have names only but the house each side continue with the original numbers.

Best wishes
:-D :-D

The age of the properties in no way precludes their being re-numbered......in fact ,the older they are, the more likely they are to have been re-numbered

LadyKira

LadyKira Report 28 Mar 2013 23:03

I believe the renumbering of streets was something to do with the nearest post office,

Not finding 210 and 212 before 1891 - off to my bed now, but will have another look in the morning if no-one else is able to help.

Am inclined to agree with GB that houses may have been re-numbered.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Mar 2013 22:51

Lots of streets, in towns and cities all over the UK were re-numbered at different times ................ even up to modern days

and, often, seemingly for no other reason than the council could re-number them!!

It didn't, and still doesn't, seem to have much to do with re-development, or new houses being built

so it might well be worth while to check out whether re-numbering had occurred at any time from, say 1800, forward.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 28 Mar 2013 22:30

My local High Street was numbered 1 - 53 down one side and back from 54 on the other side on 1901 census. The street got renumbered in 1902 or might have been 1903, to read 1,3,5 down one side and 2,4,6 down the other side, so the number do not match with the 1911 census. That is why I wondered if any research had been done

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 28 Mar 2013 22:26

You can search the 1881 census for free on FMP and Ancestry

CupCakes

CupCakes Report 28 Mar 2013 22:20

We are just starting on the area. The numbering will not of changed much because they are old Georgian/Victorian houses near the tube station.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 28 Mar 2013 22:14

Have you done any research to find out if the roads have been renumbered or renamed in the past 100 years.

CupCakes

CupCakes Report 28 Mar 2013 22:06

We have just secured funding for a local ward community historical project.I don't have membership of FMP so if anybody has a little time could they do a census.
address search from 1911 backwards as far as they can go.to see who lived at 2 properties
212 Brecknock Road, Islington London and 210 Brecknock Road Islington London

210 is still in the orginal state it was built as a single family dwelling but 212 was made into 3 flats at some stage about 30 years ago.

Please note that Brecknock Road is very long and has always partly been in Pancras/Camden so any search should include Islington or Tufnell Park.

I have an idea to include a little family research in the project to see if I can find some interesting facts about any of the occupants.
