I've just found a relative in Australia. It seems that her Granddad was my Dad's Great Uncle. What does this make us? Cousins removed, third, or fourth, or what? I just know there is someone on these boards who knows and can put us in our place, so to speak! So, thanks in advance.

Go to "Relatives" then "Hot matches" there is a chart on the right of page.

Thanks for that, Thelma. I've had a quick look, but later I shall make a pot of tea and study it in more detail! It all looks a bit complicted at the mo.

Without looking at a chart I would think that you are second cousins once removed.

I think her grandad is your grandad's uncle.

Her dad and your grandad are cousins.

She and your dad are second cousins.

So you and her are second cousins once removed.

However I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Be careful with Australian relatives. They have a tendency to fly over to England, drink all the beer and stay on like an invasion of locusts. Then locust like they eventually fly home again leaving the love struck Sheilas behind.

Rollo, I know what you mean, it's happened to me a couple of times. But on my husbands side, my lot would never behave like that!!!!!
And Kathleen, her grandad and my grandad were brothers.
Does that simlify things a bit? I must say it's giving me a headache!

If her grandad and your grandad were brothers then her grandad was your dad's uncle NOT his great uncle as you first said.

I agree that you and your Australian relative are second cousins.
