I have found a personal seal of a chap called Wymond de Brandon. He is mentioned in the Patent Rolls or Edward I of January 1279 as an attorney of the Abbott of Preaux Abbey, a Benedictine Abbey in France. But now I am stuck. Can any one suggest a way forward? I have drawn a blank at the National Archives in Kew and with History online. |

You could try the Benedictine route, if you can find a contact for them. |

Thanks for the pointers you two. I did try a museum near Preaux but got no reply. The Benedictine route is a great idea, especially Ampleforth. And an extra thank you to Cynthia for such a detailed set of instructions. Very much appreciated. I will post any positive outcomes. |

You say found - it is so interesting - would be wonderful to have something so old - have you checked if it has historicallyor monetary value. |

Yes Sue, I found the silver seal matrix with my metal detector. It is now at the British Museum awaiting a coronor's inquest. Apparently the Oxfordshire Museum wish to acquire it under the Treasure Act. An antiquity dealer has valued it at £6000, but I doubt the museum will pay that much. |
