Copying from one tree to another?

It isn't shocking to me!

I'm happy that it is still not working :-)

I don't approve of simply copying from a tree.

and, yes, I do know that it is a much-liked and wanted aspect of this site, and on ancestry!

I never open my tree to anyone, even though I know that everything on my tree is fully checked out and documented

I will send information to anyone who contacts me as a result of seeing a name as being in my private tree ............

........... I need to determine to my own satisfaction that the other person is definitely connected to that name. I will send the relevant information once that has been established :-)

It is now August 2014 and this is still a problem. Shocking.

NanaSue, Next question is how long before it is resolved?

Don't hold your breath

I don't use the facility of the clipboard but the problem has been ongoing since at least the introduction of the new tree (makeover of the site) last year

Great news - got a reply from GR support this morning - least I've now proved to myself I know what is what.

Quote:
.Thanks for getting in touch.
We're really sorry but at the moment the clipboard isn't functioning properly and this is why you've been experiencing issues.
We're terribly sorry for any inconvenience caused. The developers are aware of these issues and are looking into the problem.

Kind Regards,

Lisa

This is where the info posted by IGP comes from

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/help/faqs?key=139

You find it and other guides from the 'Help' (top of the page next to your board/name) then FAQ section.

I have a suspicion that the clip board isn't working as this query comes up fairly frequently.

If he can't get it to work, try

Open your tree
In a new window - not tab - open GR again and select the tree you want details from.
Use the 'Cascade' option on your computer and fiddle around until you have both tree windows side by side.
Although you have to manually copy details across, they're easier to see.

The issue is not the pros and cons of copying from one tree to another. It is the facility to do it if one wants to which used to be available on GR.

I personally don't copy much. However my cuz in AUS copies from me because I don't add stuff without throughly checking and send him documentary evidence.

Saves him a lot of time if he can just copy from me.

Is there nobody in this forum who can advise from practical experience.

Like IGP ....................

I would NEVER, EVER copy names from trees on here, or on ancestry

I don't trust them!

I make notes of them, then check out thoroughly before eve thinking of adding them to my tree.

IPG - ta for that but I can't even find the words you have just written. Where is that help now. Sounds very much like the old instructions.
Correction just found the help but situation remains the same

Have checked again and can't see any link to a clipboard, copy or paste.

Used to work fine with the old module but his time I'm really flummoxed

It isn't something I do but this is what the Help Pages say.

"Clipboard

The clipboard allows you to copy names from a tree you have access to and add them to your own.

When you're viewing a tree you have access, find the relation you want to copy. Click on the 'Copy' button and it will be added to your clipboard.

You need to create a relation in your tree first before you can add the details from the clipboard. Once you've created the relation, click on the clipboard icon in the top right hand corner of your tree page and click on the name of the person whose details you'd like to copy. You can then use some or all of the details from the clipboard for the new relation. You need to save any changes you make.

Please remember you must have permission when adding the names of living relations to your tree. Also, if copying names from someone else's tree we do suggest that out of politeness you ask that member's permission to do so first. At the moment it is only possible to copy a maximum of 20 names at a time.

When you view the transcription of a birth or a relative in the census you’ll see the option to add it to your clipboard. You can add the names to the clipboard and then you can go to your tree and paste the details to it. We don’t take all of the details, but you could simply copy and paste them and then add them to your tree in the Notes section for your relative. For example, you might like to add where they were living in each census and their occupation at the time.

If you want to empty the clipboard at any time, click on the 'Empty Clipboard' tab below the names on the clipboard."

Personally, and having been there, worn the tee shirt, had the tee shirt ripped of, lost the plot, got fingers burned and had to start all over, I no longer copy and paste in this manner.

If there is a branch I want to add then I check it out name by name. This will entail at the bare minimum identifying Parish Records, Census Returns and BMD entries to verify the accuracy.

My cuz in Aus asked me about coping to clipboard names from a linked tree and pasting to one's tree.

I tried myself today and can't workout how to do it.

Have I missed something - cuz says he has contacted GR nearly 3 months ago and still no concrete reply.
