Help I have ordered a death certificate for a relative and it says Cause of Death, Blown from the deck of submarine No 499 by accidental explosion of a torpedo hatch which was then under test at Vickers Ltd Barrow In Furness this was 29th August 1917 Inquest held 31st August 1917. I have googled this and can not find any information. Any ideas Sheila

His name was Edgar Brice Dunham born 1896 in Edmonton he was 21. He was a labourer. Thanks Stuart for the address. Sheila

The reference to "Yard Number" is probably not the "Number of the Yard" but what is known as the "Keel Number". Each vessel to be built is appointed a Keel Number which stays with it until the finished ship is named. So Yard Number is like a "Job or Contract Number".

The Local History section at Barrow library has always been very helpful in the past. Haven´t been for some years, so with cutbacks etc I can´t say what it´s like now, but always worth a try.
