According to Victorian Occupations, a carman could work for the railways, so perhaps he was sent out by one of the railway companies? |

Nine months is a steady fastish pace, but feasible. However, I think it's highly unlikely he would have walked all the way from Calais. It's much more likely that he took a boat to, say, Bombay or Calcutta (using the raj names), and then took a train - 3 weeks at the outside limit. |

Of mine married his wife in Feb 1909 and died in Nov 1909 in Lucknow India .......I think I,m being stupid but surely it would have taken that long to get there?? .......It snowhere near the coast!! |
