Yes, my Romany folk didnt bother talking to the census man, and some even travelled through the night on census night. :-(

Both my Mother and Father's familys had a habit of naming their first son after the father and referring to all of ther children by their middle names. My dad was named Gordon Anthony but was known his whole life as Tony (except by the idiot vicar at his funeral). We've always called my uncle Eric, but I've just found out his name was actually Arthur Eric, and his dad was Arthur.

My great grandfather went the whole hog when deciding on his name.

He was born Michael Lally,

on the census he appears as Michael Lilly, Joseph Jones and Joseph Michael Lally.

He married and died as Michael Joseph Lally

My GGrandfathers Mother died when he was very young. He put the wrong name on his MC and I had to argue with my cousin that she had gone off on a tangent using the woman he had named.

I finally proved she was wrong as his birth was registered by his Mum and as I argued she would have known her own name.

Add to that the wonderfull Scottish naming system and it can be a nightmare but we love it really don't we

this weeks finds are one brother names other as father on his marriage certificate
and other brother has child by women not wife
havent recieved certificate yet to verify but not in doubt as said child is on electoral role years later with fathers half sister
dad discribes them as birminghams krays hope he's jokeing

My Daubeneys are an absolute pain. Apart from the mis-spellings you can imagine with a name like that they're also recorded as Dobbin, Dobney, Dewbery and on and on (and that's just the ones I can find, there are other blighters who just refuse to come out of hiding).

Fathers names vary between marriage and service records, brothers claim different fathers on marriage records. They didn't register children's births or bother getting them baptised. They can't make their mind up when and where they were born.

My picture is one of them - I could smack him sometimes.

My lot are the Standleys, though they can't compete with your Dawsons.
Not a bad surname but every girl seems to be called Susannah, and to add insult to injury the males like marrying women of the same name! Total nightmare sorting them out. In some ways I had the opposite problem - they barely moved an inch and in one case 2 families with similar first names were living next door to each other!! Same family occupation should have helped but it has tied me up in knots sorting out every John and Samuel Standley, sawyer,

mine is the dawsons
they constantly change their christian names
move
have been mistrannscribed on the census
marry one person and have children by another
or lie about their childrens father
i have been haveing trouble with them since i started my tree
but keep comming back to them and finding something else that makes me intake breath sharply
sound like some family of yours please say im not the only one to have such annoying and interesting relatives
