1 Year hard labour 1910

i Have a relative who got sentenced to 1 year hard labour in 1910
What i would like to find out is whether he would of had to serve the
whole year or would he of got out early for good behaviour ?

I believe the sentences handed down at the time were served in full...depending on when in 1910 he was sentenced you could try checking 1911 Census to see if he was at home or in Prison...

remember that he might be shown under his initials only if he was in prison ...............

............ or is that not the case on the 1911 census???

Thanks very much for the feed back.
My relative is indeed on the 1911 census and if he were to have served the full sentence he would of been released Oct 1911 . His son was born 1912 April and that means its not possible that he is the father !!!!!!!!

He might not be the biological father ...................... but he is the legal father


Any child born to married woman was assumed to be the child of her husband, unless she had the agreement of another man to name him.

This applied even if the woman was a widow ................... I had one case where a husband who had been dead for 10 years was named as a child's father.



But you might want to consider ...........

.......... did he escape for a short while

......... was he released early "for good behaviour"

Even back then they let people out for good behavour. A one year sentence doesn't necessarily mean one year served....

Apparently "time off" was stopped in the prison reform of 1877, unclear when it started happening again.

which is why I only suggested "was he released early for good behaviour"

Thanks again for all the feed back .
Just to clarify that he was in prison on the night of the census 1911
To cloud things a bit more , his wife had a lodger on the night of the 1911 census and her son shares the same christian name as him
