Professional Genealogists in Ireland

Has anyone paid a professional genealogist in Ireland to do some research?

I would like to hear some peoples experiences. Also, how I can get the best out of this type of service.

Why not try searching for yourself first. Professional genealogists are not always that good as many members on here can vouch for!

If you want to search, why not post up what you know and what you are trying to find - you never know, you may get some of the answers for free. :-)

I have found a marriage certificate of Patrick Garratt and Sarah Cosgrove, they married on the 24 February 1852 at St Michaels Chapel in West Bromwich, West Midlands. They were both born in Ireland in Cong, Co Mayo. I have already found their census records since they lived in the UK, but I have been trying to find out more about their lives and family in Ireland. Patrick's surname should be spelt Geraghty, but I have found it spelt many different ways.

There are these two possibilities on rootsireland.ie

Church Baptism Cosgrave Sarah 1827 Co. Mayo
Church Baptism Cosgrave Sarah 1829 Co. Mayo

It is a pay per view site.

However, I only Patrick Garratt on that site was born too late in 1838

Parents: Edward Garratt & James Cosgrove, both labourers

Ages as per marriage cert, Patrick 22 yrs, Sarah 20 yrs, therefore born 1830 & 1832.

Zoe.. Before you look to using the services of a Pro.Gen.for the Co Mayo you need to be aware that the earliest RC records for the RC Parish of Cong and Neale only begin 1870.
Although Patrick and Sarah give their places of Birth as Cong that could refer to the actual "Civil Parish" or Cong town itself or to one of the 65 Townlands within the Civil Parish of Cong....Cong (Sth Mayo) also straddles the border with the Co Galway.
For the time period you are looking and earlier its worth bearing in mind that the West of the Island of Ireland especially the Co.Mayo was one of the worst affected by the famine and the population virtually decimated....

Have you checked to see if there were others of the same surname/place of birth in and around Wednesbury....the Church Register should give some indication....
