Edward's father was Hugh ap Oliver, there are no records of Edward after that in Selattyn until 2 daughters Elin and Margaret were baptised there to an Edward Oliver and Margaret, and he states in his will he is resident in Selattyn, I'm struggling to find a record for his marriages and baptisms of Sarah and Thomas as in most records the ap is dropped and the surname appears as just Oliver

maybe Sarah was illegitimate and baptised Charm and her father used that name??? although his son was Oliver

I'll keep searching though and thanks for the help :)

I don't know much about Welsh history, so I dont know when 'fixed' surnames came into general use, rather than patronymics.

Did the family use Charm, but if Edward was the son of an Oliver Charm, might he have reverted to using the patronomic, for some reason?

Grasping at straws here!

However he refers to his son as Thomas Oliver, and also to his(Edward's) [brother] Richard Oliver and his son Richard. so i guess that blows the theory out of the water.

But at least you have the will. :-)

interestingly on the back of one of the pages is a note, I can't make it all out but it seems to say

Oliver alias
Edward Charm's last will
^

so the will matches up with the burial in post one and I'm thinking the Sarah Charm marrying Peter are the ones mentioned in the will

both the marriage and bur in post 1 were found in the Selattyn parish records

I can't work out why he used the name Charm, I was thinking it was the name of Sarah's 1st husband but now think she maybe used it as her father did

also struggling to fit in the grandchildren mentioned in the will as their surname is Jones

thank you so much for your help
I have had this section of my family tree for some years and feel as if I actually know the people, to see the actual will is incredible
the sites mentioned will also help as I continue to search

I searched for the will on the National Library of Wales site:

http://cat.llgc.org.uk/cgi-bin/gw/chameleon?skin=profeb&lng=en

Apparently you can buy digital copies of the wills.

Item Name : Edward Oliver : will, 1737.
Item Code : SA1737-159
Item cost : £3.50

EDIT: The catalogue entry does note the condition of the will as damaged. You can see the first page in the image link I posted previously, that the page edges are a bit iffy.

Try this?

Seems to mention Sarah and Peter Tomkiss etc. EDIT, Definitely him, as it says he's a taylor (sic) in the county of salop, and the will dates 1737.

The Will doesn't seem to be on the National Archives site. Have you thought about contacting Shropshire's Archive?

I was given a lot of information re my ancestors but unfortunately am not in contact with the original researcher,
attached to an Edward ap Oliver born 1655 is the following note
'a will for Edward Oliver tailor of Selattyn proved on 10/11/1737 probably refers to the above. Describes a son Thomas Oliver and insinuates that this Thomas lives away from Selattyn (also implies is probably unmarried) Mentions a daughter Sarah Tomkins (twice married) now wife of Peter Tomkins, several grandchildren and importantly leaves a small bequest to his brother Richard and his son Richard - the Richard shown at the end?? He also mentions something about his 2nd marraige. Unfortunately there are no baptisms at Selattyn for Thomas and Sarah and probably this suggests the family lived away, also they do not appear on the Bishops census for 1681 and 1686. However maybe the Elin baptised in 1696 daughter of Edward and Margaret is Edwards daughter from his 2nd marraige, named after his mother, and indicates a return to Selattyn'

Is there a way of obtaining the above mentioned will?

whilst searching for it I have found

1724 Aug. 11. Peter Tomkins, of Oswestry, & Sarah Charm, of this p. ... mar.

1737 Oct. 21. Old Edward Charm, alias Oliver ... bur.

so if the will really does relate to my Edward ap Oliver the above finds could also link in

thank you
