I am really not sure, however I think it must have been England. He is recorded in Bengal India in 1858 as the father of Virginia Esther |

As Virginia was born in 1858, I would suggest that her father was probably born before 1840 |

Have you considered that he was an illegitimate child, born to a mother surname Matthews, and given the middle name of Maylark as an indication of the name of his father?? |
