I have just recieved the death cert of the man who I suspect is my grandfather's older brother. Birth details, 1901 and 1911 below

Death Cert says

Joseph Campbell Male 50 years of 3 Wycliffe Road West Ham a Van Man
Registered by Occupier of Central Home Leytonstone

Hypostatic Pneumonia, Spastic paraplegia since birth

has to be the right one I think due to

1) the address link to 1901 census
2) the occupation
3) the fact no one in my family ever mentioned him
4) his mother died in 1904 and all the other brothers went to live with maternal uncle. Father disappeared off back to sea and sent money home

This is the saddest thing I have found so far in my tree I think

I'm not sure that a spastic paraplegic would have been able to work - but that is only supposition. I have no first-hand knowledge of the condition

In the past, HSP also has been classified as type I or type II on the basis of the patient's age at the onset of symptoms, which influences the amount of spasticity versus weakness. Type I is characterized by age onset below 35 years, whereas Type II is characterized by onset over 35 years. In the type I cases, delay in walking is not infrequent and spasticity of the lower limbs is more marked than weakness. In the type II muscle weakness, urinary symptoms and sensory loss are more marked. Furthermore, type II form of HSP usually evolves more rapidly.[10]

You haven't mentioned year of death

Jan, if it were me I would be 100% satisfied - apart from the evidence you have, I can't see another Joseph who fits that death cert.

No Reggie there is no mention of a disability on the 1911 census, although it does say on the 1901 that he was a parcel van boy and again as formerly a van guard on the 1911

I have also downloaded stuff from deceased on line which indicates he is buried in West Ham cemetery

I am pretty sure it's the right man

that's put a right downer on me today !!

I have Ancestry, I will have a look later for him, I think he may have been in and out of hospital/home frequently

Just thought don't the electoral registers only cover London?

These areas would still have been considered Essex at the time

If I remember correctly, Spastic Paraplegia is now known as Cerebral Palsy.

I have looked again at the death certificate of Adelaide Louisa Campbell (Joseph's mother) who died in 1904

The column which says Signature,description and residence of informant says

M A Grimwood , present at death, 3 Wycliffe Road, Stratford

Now my dad said that he thought "one of them was adopted" I always thought he meant my grandad as he was shipped off to live with his uncle but I am now thinking that maybe this nice lady (who was still at 3 Wycliffe Road in 1911) actually took Joseph in and may have looked after him as best she could

From the evidence I have, I am happy that it's him

Some parts of Essex including the West Ham area only became part of London for the ER's in the 1960s

yes Jax, I am with you, I looked but there is nothing from the Stratford area on Ancestry

The bit they lived in is now under the Olympic velodrome !
