In 1858 on the wedding certificate of his son John Dodd Fisher his father William Fisher's profession is described as Minister of the Gospel - does anyone known what religion that might be. Thank you.

Probably a Protestant non conformist. Added - or possibly the Church of Scotland/Presbyterian

A CofE Priest is likely to be named as a Clerk in Holy Orders or something more specific like Curate, Priest etc.

What was the denomination of the place they married as that might give a clue. Or have you found any baptisms of subsequent children in a non-conformist place of worship?

Have deleted incorrect 1958 marriage, according to a tree on ancestry, it's this one:

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Jun 1858
Fisher John Tynemouth 10b 284
Patterson Sarah Tynemouth 10b 284

Potty

Potty Report 13 Jul 2013 13:14

The 1861 census attached to him on that tree has his POB as Scotland.

Did John have a brother Fergus? If so, Sarah is shown as a widow in 1881 and then married to John D Fisher in 1891!!!

Re: "Minister of the Gospel". This refers to the Scottish Protestant Church where we do not use the term Vicar. The preacher "Ministers" to his congregations needs.

After the reformation in the 16th century the Scots were very wary of a return to "Romish Practices". This resulted in many arguments about the "True Religion" and details of ceremony and theology which produced splits between sects. In 1842 there was major split, known as the Disruption in the Established Church of Scotland during which about a third of worshippers elected to join the new "Free Church of Scotland". Even this group produced dissenting sub groups up to the end of the 19th century at which time some re-formed creating yet more confusion.

When searching Scottish records expect to find "Establshed" "Free" "Episcopal" Church of Scotland as well as "Burghers" "Anti-Burghers" "Glassites" and other sects which are worth looking up on Wikipedia if they occur in your tree.

Malcolm

Is a Dissenting Minister the same as a Minister of the Gospel and would a dissenter be more likely to be Scottish than English.

English / Welsh / Irish - according to this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissenter

"The term does not apply to those bodies who dissent from the Presbyterian Church of Scotland ."

Thank you for your reply, yet another brick wall in cracking where William Fisher and his son John Dodd Fisher were born.
