It is only the personal returns for the 1931 census which were burnt - not by an enemy air raid but by the civil service in some kind of mix-up. Bits and pieces are said to have survived.

The statistical data derived from the returns is just fine and was of course used a great deal from 1944 when such things as the NHS and reformed education were being worked out. This data is in the public domain.

For the period 1911-1981 Ay has extensive on line voters lists for Greater London and some other areas as well as the UK phone book. The London Gazette will also have details of most war postings for 2nd Lt and above.

For those with US links the 1930 and 1940 census are available.

Reggie is correct - the 1921 census should hopefully be available in 2022 and if I'm lucky I expect that is the last one I will see as the next census records for 1931 were destroyed in a fire (apart from the Scottish ones) and no census was taken in 1941 because of the war.

When are we able to see the next census after 1911??
