I was christened in 1967 and my godparents were named...That was in parish records for Brighton, Sussex...

I have done some digging on line and now found where the baptism records are held...it just means a journey sometime !

A word of advice from my own personal experience.

If you do find the church in question has a website and a phone number. I would recommend phoning first.

I have sent numerous emails to many different churches around the country and very few ever reply. But a phone call always comes up trumps. As does a letter with a s.a.e.

I think many churches have got websites, but that in many instances the people who deal with the enquiries are often not that good with computers. ;-)

I have seen filmed records in a main library, where godparents were named.
This was for 1980s / 1990s if I recall and was only one particular church on Romney Marsh, Kent.
Other filmed records seen have not included those details, but I agree they will have been logged at the church, at the time.

Maggie, if you don't live near the church where you were baptised, they possibly have a website which would give you contact details. As Reggie says, the Godparents should be named in their records. Good luck.

As a possible guideline.............

In my Church, I can access my son's baptism record........1970

Earlier family baptisms at the same Church (1948/9) are at the County Records Office

But, of course, it all depends on how busy the Church is................and when the record books become full

Depending on how recent your christening was, the record will be either in the Church........or at the County Records Office.

The Godparents should be named

Maggie, just thinking about it I am pretty sure one of my mum's friends was my godmother, but as I knew her all my life as 'auntie' anyway, I never thought of her as 'godmother' so might be worth asking any older family members or friends of your parents?

Surely the harsh answer is that if you do not know who they were, they did not do a very good job, and would not want to be reminded of that fact.

I hope someone can help with Godparents, I am racking my brains but though I know I have a baptism card, I think it's only got my mum and dad on it.

I have a certificate of my christening. Is there anyway on line that I could find out who my godparents were/are. There is no mention of them, and no-one I can ask. Would there be record in the church ?
