How soon aftre a death can I obtain a copy of the will a relative died 2 years ago exec of will was solicitor

I don't think there is a time limit

Provided you have the name and date of death, the probate office will undertake a search for you, 4 years either side of the date of death

£6.00 for the search, including a copy of the Will, if there was one

If no copy of the Will can be found, you will not be notified, and your £6.00 will not be refunded

Only Wills which go to Probate are in the public domain.

How did you find out about the Executor?

in a letter from their offices sent to inform me of the persons death the solicitor is stated as executor of will have asked for a copy several times over the past 2 years and am still waiting

If the solicitor, in his capacity of executor, wrote to tell you of the death, it sounds as though you are a beneficiary.

If that is correct, and you haven't received your legacy, then either there is a delay in obtaining probate, or there isn't enough money in the estate to cover their fees or possibly they are just not very good solicitors.

IF my guess is right, do you know another solicitor you could discuss it with?

If my guess is wrong, please put it down to a vivid imagination!!

If you use the link posted by Gins and scroll towards the end, there are addresses for local Probate offices.
I went in to Winchester office and was able to check for myself, free, whether or not a person who died in 1983 had left a Will which had gone to probate.

Advisable to phone first to check if you can do this in the other addresses.
