Birth certificate question

Sorry if this is a silly question ... What does it mean on a birth certificate if it says the mothers name then says 'late' Doran 'formally' Leonard ...which one is her name on her birth certificate?

That's a bit unusual!
Maybe if you tell us who this is and when - assuming no longer living - somebody might be able to help. Is there a father?

It normally means the mother was previously married, so its her previous married name and her Maiden name

Just have a few Brick walls that need breaking down, some I dont think I will ever knock down, not even make a dent in but you never know whats round the corner :- )..... Yorkshire, London, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Wiltshire, Dorset, Surrey, Essex and Holland.

They do mean different things.

I have a birth cert for OH's gt grandfather and it states mother name late and formerly (spelling).

I do know that the "formerly" name was 2x gt mother's maiden name...she had been married twice.

My great aunt was married 3 times. I have just looked at one of her children's certs to be sure I've got it in the correct order.

The birth cert should start with the name the mother is using at the birth, usually a married name.

The late name is a husband that died and formerly is her maiden name.

In your case Leonard would be the birth/maiden name.

It would mean that she had been married more than once....

BUT.....the word is not 'formally'..................it is 'formerly'

Look for her marriage to the child's father..................

'late' does not mean that her first husband had died.............she could have been divorced..........merely that there had been a previous husband

The easy way to answer your question is to look at the birth registration on the GRO index..........the mother's maiden name will be the one recorded on the index
