Even if you don't have an Ancestry sub, you can search on Ancestry and, by clicking on the shopping basket, see the ref details of the order Ancestry will place for you. It doesn't give all the details on the GRO index - specifically, it doesn't give mum's maiden surname, spouses's surname, age at death. Also, having Ancestry place the order for you will more than double the cost to you.

With the year and quarter, you could search for the actual image thru 1983 on FreeBMD, even if it's not yet transcribed - the view images link on FreeBMD's home page leads to a klunky interface, but it eventually gets you the image.

For those who are not aware, FreeBmd automatically adds the wildcard * to the end of whatever you enter under first names.

Thus Jo searches as if you had entered Jo* - so you get John, Joseph, John William etc

John F searches as if you had entered John F* - so you get John Faulkner, John Frederick, John Francis, John F etc

The other thing I have noticed (using the OP example) is that after about 1911, only the initial of second names appears in the GRO index.

All of this is a good reason to always enter less rather than more. If you get too many results then you can always narrow the search down.

The reason you didn't find it was because you probably put the full name in. John F Dunn found it but John Frederick didn't.
