For Lancs, http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/ has the parish records and http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ has the online local indexes.


There are other online local indexes at: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd including http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/

There is usually less detail than Lancs BMD, but they do pin down who wed whom.
S Tyneside has a key to their church codes online.
Often, you have to check the postal application form to find the actual local ref from which you can guess the subdistrict for Bs & Ds. Look up the B or D on FreeBMD, then click on the rego district link, then the more info "here" link to get a list of all the subdistricts that ever existed in an RD.

Here's a worked example:
Births Sep 1865 (>99%)
Robson William Chapman Auckland 10a 220

Looking up the RD info gets:
AUCKLAND REGISTRATION DISTRICT
Sub-districts : Bishop Auckland, Hamsterley, Hurworth.

Birth certificate for:
Surname: ROBSON
Forename: William C
Year: 1865
District: Durham Western

The postal application form gives:
Register No. - Entry No. - District
HAM26 - 281 - Durham Western (1865)

So it's not too hard to guess HAM26 refers to the 26th rego for Hamsterley


If you're after OPRs, then FMP have started indexing these and putting the images online.
Also FS has some (unindexed) Durham BTs online, but these obviously are all CofE, see:

I don't think you will find them online.

Have a look here and scroll to the bottom of the page:-

It says County Durham is included in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.

Hi,
can anyone please tell me does Durham have BMD records on line in much the same way as Lancashire BMD. ?

I understand there is access to parish records, picked that up from a post on here, but they are Church of England and the birth I want to confirm was catholic.

Thanks for any help you can give.
