Currently being built as a "sister" site to Scotlands People, Scotlands Places will be more than just Place names, but also a database of historical data regarding each place and including up to date research info owned by The Scottish "Ancient Monuments" authority.

They are also copying and transcribing additional info such as Tax records, the old Horse, Dog, Clock&Watch, Window and Hearth taxes. Yesterday I found by ancestor in the hearth tax lists in 1691, a great confirmation of his whereabouts and that he was a good honest citizen like yours truly ;-)

Scotland places currently charge 15 pounds per quarter for access though there is considerable info available free as well.

Thank you Malcolm. Some interesting facts there - I think it looks like a couple of my lot paid clock taxes!

Hi Malcolm,
I found that some of the records that you mention can also be found for free on the NLS (National Library Of Scotland) site.
I found my Oh's gggg grandfather paying horse tax in 1797, but I have to admit that didn't find the NLS site very easy to navigate!

That's right GlasgowLass. A lot of what is being gathered by Scotlands Places is available elsewhere. The new site is aiming to transcribe a lot of information which is currently in handwritten form. After that it will be more easily searchable online. The main areas seem to be the old Taxes (i'm working on Horse Taxes) and Place Names from the Ordnance Survey (O.S.)

I think it's mean of you to use a teacake avatar, knowing I live abroad :-( Drool.
