Hello again all.
I was wondering if anybody could tell me what records are available in the UK archives regarding servicemen or women. I am looking for information on the service record of my grandfather, John McEntee, who served in WW1. His regiment was the "Kings Own Scottish Borderers". In Australia, the National Archives contains quite a bit of detail on service personal such as description, next of kin, place of enlistment theatre of service, and wounding, illness and awards etc. Do the UK records have this kind of detail available?

Records for UK Army servicemen for WW1 are held on Ancestry, although you can find them on the National Archives.

Only about 25% of them survive as the repository was bombed during WW2.
Some of the surviving files are fairly complete with details of service, hospitalization, relatives and letters. Others may just have the enlistment/conscription form and possibly details taken at their medical.

If you care to give full details of John McEntee - any middle name, place and year of birth and next of kin, we can look to see what there is available.

If this record relates to 'your' John, there doesn't seem to be a record set which relates to the number. Someone else may have more success in searching

He was born in Glasgow in 1897. No middle name. He was married in Glasgow in May of 1918 and his residence given at that time (on the marriage registration) was Clare Morris, County Mayo. The marriage registration also designates him as "Private: K.O.S.B."
I am sure that the one that +++DetEcTive+++ posted is the correct one. That Index card was all I was able to find as well. I was hoping there may have been more information at another place or archive.

If you can track down the regimental records for the Kings Own, there might be something else about him. In all likelihood, his main file is one of those lost/burned.
