Yes before 1752 the year started on 25th March (Lady Day) rather than Easter.

Thanks for that Flip. I have just checked the PR for Joshua's birth and upto 18th March is under 1749 and from 25th March is under 1750.

Just to clarify a point about the birth date - in the old parish records a new year started at Easter, so anyone being born before Easter (even in March/April) of 1750 would be transcribed in bishops transcripts as born in 1749. Likewise someone born up to Easter 1751 would be transcribed as born in 1750.

So it depends on who is doing the modern day transcription whether they get it right in todays terms of a calendar!

Think MCs interpretation of the image is spot on.

No age is given; most of the entries on the page show, eg Ann of John or Ann wife of John, but Joshua's does not. The address is quite difficult to read but looks like Crimwell Gold.

Interestingly, on the Huddersfield one, beneath Joshus is Ann of Eli Shaw, Scamanden. possibly a daughter of Eli and Hannah.

The records are from Ancestry, West Yorkshire PRs.

MarieC, I think you're right, Joshua was b. before they got married.

Potty you're probably right about the double transcript, I never gave that a thought.
Could I Please ask you the date of death for Joshua Beaumont. (I don't know where you found it).

Having looked at the various transcriptions and the original image of the baptism this is my take on it:

Joshua was the illegitimate son of Hannah Beaumont of Slaithwaite and the putative father was Eli Shaw of D Head (Don't know what that's an abbreviation of).

On other records Slaithwaite is spelled Slaighwaigh so think Slaigh could be an abbreviation of that.

I wonder if the church in Slaithwaite was a daughter church of the one is Huddersfield, and records were duplicated, as there is also a death of a Joshua Beaumont recorded at both of them, with the same date and address.

On the image Eli Shaw is not in brackets and there is an and sign next to his name. I would read the entry as:

Joshua of Hannah Beaumont Slaigh and Eli Shaw D.Head

D Head is possibly and address.

The year is also wrong, it is 1750 not 1749

Thank you both for your replies, the entry seems to be transcribed twice, I did think perhaps Hannah was a single woman with a child.

Why would the father's name be put in brackets?

I believe Hannah married in 1751 but not to Eli Shaw.

The Ancestry record posted by Gins has an image Slaigh or something.

There are no other 'mothers' mentioned on the other baptisms on the page, just the fathers names.

Wonder if this record has any bearing.

Edit: There is the name Eli Shaw D Head not sure he is the father? Looking again, it looks this could be the address? Sleigh is also written on the entry, this is an address as others have the same

Could some kind person tell me what (sw) means after a woman's name, is it single woman?
I'm looking at the Parish Records, on FmP at a baptism for Joshua Beaumont bapt 1 April 1750 in Huddersfield. Mothers Forenames: Hannah (sw) Fathers Forenames: (Eli Shaw).
