In view of the fact that there is a long gap of time between this marriage and the previous entry on the page, I'm wondering if this clause perhaps applies...................

(7) "By superintendent registrars certificate" is a very rare finding. It is issued for a Church of England marriage but instead of banns being called in the church, notice of marriage has been given to the superintendent registrar. In the early days this would be necessary where services were held so infrequently e.g. in a small chapel,that it was not possible to call the banns on three succesive Sundays and get married all within the three months time limit.

I will see what I can find out about that church at that time.

When someone is married in a CofE church 'by certificate; it means that the vicar wanted/wants the couple to give notice at a Register Office because he would not marry them 'by banns'. This could be for a number of reasons, the most common, but not in these case, being one or both of the couple being divorced. If the vicar thinks that reading the banns would 'upset; his congregation, then the reading of banns is avoided by civil preliminaries, and is at the 'discretion' of the vicar.

I have not come across this term used for a marriage in a C of E church before, but only in non conformist ceremonies or those in a Register Office.

Hazarding a guess that the vicar had requested sight of the death certs........................to verify that the parties were free to marry

No doubt someone will have chapter and verse.........

If not........you could ask your local vicar.

What circumstances would mean that a couple married in a Parish church after certificate?
The groom was a widower, his bride a spinster.
This was May1883 in Yorkshire.

I have a printout of the page in the parish register and note that the previous entry also shows a marriage after certificate. This was between a widow and a widower and was in August 1882.

Both entries are signed by the same Vicar, so presumably he performed the services.
