Thanks guys. Yes, that's him on Ancestry. My mistake, it was his father that was in the Middlesex regiment as a driver - too old to fight. you are correct in saying he was with the Oxford & Bucks. I was hoping Forces War Records would have some further information but c'est la vie!

Their is only one Stephen S Stewart listed on Ancestry and the national archives medal card index,

If its your man then you have some details wrong about him

Have you seen the record on Ancestry for Stephen Sydney Stewart? It mentions the Oxford and Bucks Lt. Infantry also the Scottish Regiment. He received the British war Medal. There is a letter from him asking why he was being told to rejoin the Cyclist Corps when he was previously dischaged as he was under military age.

This sounds like your man but you'll need an Ancestry sub to look at the images.

They don't hold army personnel records for soldiers who served in WW1 or WW2

Ancestry is probably your best bet for WW1 personel records but only abt 30% survived due to bombing in WW2

i want to find out if they have anything on my grandfather Stephen S Stewart who was in the Middlesex Regiment during WW1 and then with the London Scottish regiment. I know he was seconded to the Cycle Corps at some point. he was born in 1898/99 in Guernsey. Forces War Records don't allow me to do a search beyond a name and Stewart is a very common name. They expect me to take out a subscription on the offchance they hold something about him. I don't mind paying if I do find something, but it seems a bit unreasonable to ask for money up front with no certainty of finding anything at all!

[Correction - he was in the Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry, not the Middlesex Regimment]
