Is there a move afoot to try to get the 1921 census made available before 2021? Is there a petition to sign? Bob

There probably is a petition somewhere....but I doubt whether it will happen before 2022

The petition says:
". . . . . Many people that are on the 1921 census are not around now to issues of peoples rights should not be affected! . . . . . . "

There are lots of nonagenarians around.

My Mother is 92 and going strong. She tells me she has every intention of being around for at least the next 10 years !!!!

I would love to see my name on a census.

I have mixed feelings about publishing the 1921 census earlier. I do respect the privacy of people who are alive now who would be on that census. Whilst I have no family myself who are still alive from that time, I do know friends and in-laws relatives who were alive then and would love to see themselves. After all, their vital records re: births and marriages are in the public domain.

Selfishly, it would answer so many questions for me if I could see it so I will sign the petition.

ADDED: My friends grandfather is nearly 104 and he was thrilled when we enclosed a copy of the 1911 census with him on it in his 100th birthday card.

If the US census can be published to 1940 I don't see the harm.

The government has apparently said that under no circumstances will the 1921 census be released early, unlike the 1911 Census which was released a few months early.

This is seemingly because the legislation that states how long a census is to remain sealed was in place before the 1921 Census, but not until after the 1911 Census

To be honest, the best census for family historians was the 1911 with the 'children' part.

The 1921 will be pretty much like all the past ones, just a list of names, addresses and occupations etc.,

With more electoral rolls becoming digitised, what is the need. And with the Births having mothers maiden name, more information is available via other sources.

Have not bothered with petition as it would take an act of parliament to have the 1921 opened early. And I cannot see any government doing this just for us Family Genealogists, no matter how many people sign....

Whilest appreciating that many of the older members won't be active researchers, what happened to waiting?

I blame it on today's instant gratification society :-D

When the 1941 US census was released, i asked a number of US contacts how they felt about it. With no exceptions they didn't mind that they and their immediate families were listed. Mind you, they all had FH research in common ;-)

How would you feel if the 1951 census was published say in 5 years time. It would show your family on it.

Your parents signed it in the belief that details would not be released for 100 years.

So what is the difference.

The 1921 census for England/Wales will never be released as in its present status its expempt from the 100 year closure.

Its the one census to date that cant ever be released......unless a bill is passed for its release,,,,,,,,, let alone early........

The 1921 census was more detailed than the 1911 one although the items about dead children and infirmities were dropped.

It had ages in years and months, addresses of employment and a more detailed breakdown of the details of living children.
