Have got an up to date map of Manchester, minus the index, but would like to know this location. The information is not vital so please don't go to too much trouble but would appreciate info if anyone has an old map of the area. Thanks - j

Reggie, yes I have tried googling and haven't got any further, hence my request on here.
If I had been asked about a road in my own area, the chances are I could have answered someone immediately.
I have an up to date map of Manchester without the index, in other words if the location still exists today and is on my map,I cannot find it because the index has gone missing. I would like to know where Old Garrett Road would have appeared on it. Sorry if I haven't made myself clear.-j

Just read my topic again. The 1836 refers to the year I am asking about, not the number of the road-j

.......and the one immediately following is BROOK STREET

Googling and searching on one of the online maps, brings up Barrett Street but not Old Barrett St. Barrett Street is in the Old Trafford/Stretford area of Manchester (and apparently Lowry was born there).

Maybe if somebody has access to FMP they could do an address search on a later census or you could try looking for one of the other streets from the area (from the 1841 census) and see if you can find them, to give you an idea of which area - Manchester is a very large city, residents of one area would not know all the streets in the whole city.

For anyone interested London Road is the continuation of Piccadilly...... and Old Garrett Road is not the same as Old Barratt Street....but thanks for trying.

Excellent Reggie. I have managed to find the map I want. Whilst I haven't found the exact address I have located Granby Row and managed a print of that area.

I think Garratt Rd is now called Princess St.

Looking at Reggie's Coxlands, and paging back to the beginning of the ED, we see London Rd on p 1-2 then Granby Row on p 2-7, then Garratt Rd on p 7-8.
Starting on p 9, the addy's given as "Garratt Rd or Brook St" - I only checked thru p 12.

On a modern map, Princess St is renamed as Upper Brook St as it crosses under the motorway.

Go to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ and search for 384300,397600 - zoom in to max step. The arrow-head is at the junction of Granby Row and Princess St, abt 400m W of Manchester Piccadilly station.

Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html and search for the same coordinates. Select a really large scale map, like the 1891 1:500 town plans - one can see the Old Garratt Dye Works on Brook St, opposite Granby Row, and the Old Garratt Inn on the E side of Brook St, just N of the railroad. Also, just a couple of houses up Granby Row on the N side is the remains of Grrratt Hall. The same details are on the more time appropriate 1851 1:1056 town plans, but it's harder to make out the text (but not too hard if you've seen the 1891 plans first).
