I also have read that knickers as we know did not exist then ............

.......... if they wore anything it was split at the crotch. No need to take them down

Where did you get that one from, Mel? Crinolines were known for flying in the ladies' faces at the slightest of breezes. Underwear was a must.

I think the worst thing is that they did'nt wear any underwear beneath those skirts. Dos'nt bare thinking about does it?

Just came across an article in the Manchester Courier September 21 1861. A girl visiting a local apiary within a pleasure gardens caught her crinoline on a beehive. The whole lot came crashing down and the swarm of angry bees went up inside her crinoline! Aaaargh!
