Adam, is he still alive? If not, could you post his name and birth details, including MMN and any addresses that you have? As I said above, I have successfully helped in this sort of query before but we do need names and dates if we are going to be able to help.

Do you meen online electoral rolls ?

Electoral rolls are kept at the library local to that address If you are not local to the library get in contact with them and they may do a lookup for you? possibly for a small fee

Thanks to everyone for their replies and suggestions. Some responses to your queries below.
I did post this query recently and deleted in error … have only started using the site.
I am looking to trace my family tree.
My dad was born in Scotland in 1931, the electoral roll isn’t available yet.
His mothers name is quite common.
I have two addresses for his mother, one from his birth certificate and one from his adoption papers.
I tried searching for my dad using the other members tree facilities however the link I found was not related. There are a few links using his mothers name but I have yet to contact the tree owners.

Potty, no one is assuming the mother was in her 20's I gave an age of 20+/- 3/4 years as the start point (You have to start somewere) because most births given up for adoption at a very young age were to unmarried mothers in that age group,

I also suggested that if no matches were found the search area should be extended and that would includes the age range

We are however assuming that the birth was illegitimate ? because of no mention of a father and the child being adopted at a very young age

As you don't give any dates can we assume that both your father-in-law and possibly his mother are still alive? If this is not the case, could you please give us some dates.

You say you have the birth cert - is the mother's usual address given and is this different to the birth address? I wouldn't assume that the mother was in her 20s - I helped somebody on a similar search and the mother was in her early 40s!

Although not with a 100% certainty, if he was born in Scotland it is likely that his mother was also born in Scotland.

The alternative is that she could have lived/was born in a 'Border' area of England, or had been sent to Scotland to relatives to give birth

Scottish BMD can be found on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ which is a pay to view site. There are no subscriptions available.

Does the birth cert have an address that you can use to search electoral roll?

where and when was he born?

How common is his mothers name?

Search for possible births based on his mother being 20 years old (at the time of his birth) +/- 3/4 years in that area then if no matches extend your search area, Then look for marriages to eliminate those married before and at the time of his birth,

Added, Also have you used the search all members trees facility on GR to see if anyone else has either him or his possible mother in their tree.

My wife is hoping to find her grandmother on her fathers side. Her father was born in Scotland and adopted at a very young age. She has his birth certificate and adoption papers however his mothers date of birth is not shown on either of them making it difficult to trace her.
