It looks like I have a pretty daunting task ahead...I am unlikely to be visiting Italy in the near future, so will see how much info I can glean from those links you have kindly given me.

I think you will find that our central Registration system is very unique in Europe.

As said before in most European countries it is all done by town, and often not even computerised!

Maybe! a much cheaper route than traipsing from one commune to another!

Unless you know the exact location your folks were born you have an almost impossible task. Italian BMD's are registered in the local Commune.

There is NO national database. Usually, the only way forward with Italian research is to visit the commune office where folk were born, and believe me, you will need plenty of time and patience, and still may not get a result.

Karen if you Google Italian Genealogy there are quite a few sites.

I have no experience of family research in Italy, but now find my research takes me to Naples and Rome.
I need to look for BMD's in both cities, for the decades 1950/1960 (to start with).

I've had a cursory glance, via a google search, but I'm not making much headway...does Italy have a national bmd database along the lines of FreeBMD?
Even if there isn't such a site, can anyone point me to some tried and tested websites for Italian family research?
