I have a number of copies of original baptism records....on some, above the child's christian name, are the letters P.B. underlined.

Can someone tell me what they mean please...

I know at least one child died within a year of birth

I would think it probably stands for Private Baptism. If a child is ill and perhaps not expected to live they might be baptised at home or in hospital. This would be classed as a private baptism.
