Thanks for all the information. I have tried to find the marriage on Ancestry but not been able to yet. I also looked up information through his sister Ann. However I then found other Scantlebury's in the area in a different family and got myself confused! I do think that the family in the workhouse is the right one though.

I am trying to find a birth and marriage record for James Henry Scantlebury, trying to also find out who his parents are. He was born in approx. 1865 in the Tavistock, Devon area I believe or possibly across the border into Cornwall. I have a photo of his gravestone so I know he died 9th August 1949 at Culverhill, Sydenham, Tavistock, Devon. He married Eliza, possible surname Paynter/Painter. I have a family member who believe he was in the workhouse in Tavistock, Devon. I have found a census record in 1871 in Tavistock, Devon, showing a record for a James Scantlebury at the age of 7 in the workhouse.

I would be very grateful for any information.
