Hi
I seem to have hit a wall whilst researching the Fraser and Bethune families in the Inverness area of Scotland. This is what I have:
Bethune family: Duncan Bethune (born c 1772) m Margaret/Marjory Clark (b c1772) In the 1841 census they are living in Boleskine & Aberstarf, Inverness-shire 1851 Census: Duncan in same area but now widower - his birth place given as Morven, Aberdeenshire (originally scripted as Morven, Inverness-shire) Family of Duncan and Margaret: Ann b1797, Alexander b1798, Isabella 1800 - 1890, Jean 1802, Kenneth c1807, Duncan 1812, Georgina.
Fraser family: William Fraser and Ann Smith (Croy and Dalcross) John b1769, Alexander (1775 -1856), Katharine 1777, Katherine 1779, William 1782
Alexander above (1775 - 1856) married (1) Margaret Fraser & (2) Elizabeth Munro Children of Alexander Fraser and Margaret Fraser: John (1797 - 1877), William 1799
Children of Alexander Fraser and Elizabeth Munro Margaret 1808, Ann 1809, James 1811, Catherine 1812, Elizabeth 1814, Hugh 1816, Alexander 1818
In the 1841 Alexander (1775 - 1856) was living at Carnlaw of Culloden, Inverness and remained there until his death. Same applies to his son John.
The two families are linked through the marriage of John Fraser (1797 - 1856) and Isabella Bethune (1800 - 1890) - my ggg grandparents
I would appreciate any help. My main diffficulties are the very variable spelling of Bethune and the fact that Fraser is such a common name in the Inverness area. While I have been able trace my direct line I am struggling with the branches of the families. Additionally of course I would like to take my family line as far back as possible.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Boards, Jean.
Can you post the full details of the 1841 and 51 censuses - I can't find them unless Duncan is shown as Heaton on the 1851,posted below.
You say you have traced your direct line. Can you tell us which of the children is your direct ancestor, so that we don't spend time looking for what you already have, and also which of the branches you are looking for.

Thank you very much for prompt replies. Sorry I haven't used the boards before so not quite sure of the protocol.
1841 Census for Duncan and Margaret Beaton: Boleskine & Abertarff Duncan Beaton 60 (Labourer) Inverness-shire Margaret Beaton 60 Inverness-shire Fraser Ann 15 Inverness-shire McDairmid Christian 6 Inverness-shire The 1851 census is as you've listed above except it is written as Beaton in the listing I've seen. Duncan and Margaret above are my gggg grandparents. Their daughter Isabella (1800 -1890) married John Fraser (1797 - 1877). Isabella and John's daughter, Ann Fraser, (listed in the 1841 census with Bethune grandparents) was my g grandmother. Ann Fraser married William Fell (born Newcastleton 1828) before emigrating to the Falkland Islands in 1860.

I have some background knowledge of Margaret Clark (nee Fraser) - 1851 census at Carnlaw.
Thanks again for your assistance.
