I did wonder about Heanor but as it is in Derbyshire I wasn't sure. I can't remember where I got my chimney sweep from, possibly Ancestry before they altered it all. I found it so much easier then. I'm sure it was a census when they all lived in Leicester. I have been doing my tree for about 12 years so it is difficult to remember where I have found things.
I have gone a long way back from the Clays but have found it harder to sort the Smiths.

I wonder if it is Heanor. That is in Derbyshire but it was in the Basford registration district which is mostly in Notts..

Admittedly it doesn't fit in well with the image but, bearing in mind the enumerator may not have heard correctly, it is a possibility.

Have had another look at the H
Whilst the H in Hamer doesn't look like the H in Henry further down the same page or in Henshaw Street where they live, if you go to the next page the top name is Henry and the H has been done with much more of a flourish and I would say does match the H in Hamer.

Now to decide if the "amer" bit says "amer"

Can't see a current place name to fit the bill Notts or Leics and it could be one of those places near to a county border so falls in either. The m could be r n, the e could be l with a squiggle after that could fit several choices of word endings! ETC

No what I meant is that I thought I had put that up and not that I did. Must have had a senior moment. Probably oh coming out and talking to me and I forgot.

Still looking at this Hamer. The 1841 dos'nt help as it just says that John was not born in the county.

Unless I can't see for looking MFG, then I don't see a 1861 census from you.

Yes it was Gillians tree. I know that John's son was also John, born Earl Shilton Leicestershire. he married Elizabeth Jordan and lived Orchard Street in Leicester. I have both Johns as being chimney sweeps but I could be wrong with John born 1800.

Believe this to be Kezia in 1861, transcribed as Henry!! The original is not convincing enough for FMP to do a change I don't think but will try.

Hi Gillian, It may have been you that let me view your tree for which I was grateful for. I have a long list of the Clays but it's the Smiths that have got me puzzled, maybe because there are so many of them.

Do you have gggrandad on any census at all so we can start looking in an approximate area for somewhere spelt something like.......................

Hi, a kind person on Genes re. allowed me to see her tree. I was looking for my Grt. Grt. granddad born about 1800. This nice person thought that he was born at Hamer Nottinghamshire but I can't find a Hamer at all. Has anyone else heard of it please?
John moved to Leicester when he married Kesiah ( spelt different ways ) Clay. I would like to find the parents of John but don't know where to look. He could be anywhere in Nottingham or Leicester?
