My grandad was the last of eleven children, all but three of his brothers and sisters died before they were two years old. His mother, my great grandmother died with complications two days after my grandad was born. :-(

Whilst researching families for a WW1 project I recently came across a census where the mother had born 6 children and only had the two surviving sons.

Not the significant number of deaths as mentioned above, but within the next 4 years she lost her husband and her two remaining sons were casualties.

How indeed did women cope back then?

On this theme I recently found a 1911 census entry where in response to the questions about number of children born alive & number of children who had died, the family recorded that 13 children had been born alive, but only 1 it appears was still alive. I have yet establish more detail, but I find it difficult to imagine the grief suffered by the parents.

I found one the other day for the 1911 census.

A young couple had one child, no name, girl, two days old written by her entry. This was then crossed out and DIED, written next to it.

I can find no birth or death record for her neither.

His death was entered onto the Mortcloth on 31 Mar 1851 and his will confirms that he died on this date.

Loadman and Alexander died before the next census

I was looking at OH maternal grans side of the family

I knew from speaking to gran that she married at 18 just to get away from being the family nursemaid for all the babies born

She wasnt telling porkies cos her parents had loads of babies and many died in their early weeks or months.

She must have felt she was at fault somewhere along the line but have bought several of her young siblings death certs to see the cause of death was syphilis !!

No way was she at fault but at that time VD was a big problem

How unbelieveably sad. Wasn't sure whether to post or not, but maybe it's good to acknowledge this young man. Just makes you thankful for what you have. RIP.
