The Find Existing facility came in with the new tree. It was a good feature which was rather overlooked because of all the complaints about the other changes.

Well, I edited one of those marriages, using "Find Existing", which it seems I didn't use before, to see what would happen. (In this marriage, the woman had married her brother-in-law - ie - her brother's wife's brother.)

And it works - excellent!
I'll go through my tree and do the same for all the other similar marriages.

Thanks, KenSE - can't think how I could be so unobservant as not to notice the "Find Existing" button years ago!

I have many instances of this in my tree and it looks fine.
In one particular family, a widowed man and both his daughters married 3 siblings!

The father is also a now a brother in law to both of his daughters, and he is also the father in law to both his brothers in law ???
His wife is both the step mother and sister in law to his daughters and she is both a sister and step mother in law to both of her brothers.. AAARGGG

So how does that show up on the tree? Does it end up with duplicate entries - one for the person in his/her "proper" place as the child of his/her parents, and another as the spouse of the cousin?

I have several instances of that in my tree, and had to add a note to the spouse entry, saying to look at the other entry to see the parents/siblings. (And vice versa - a note on the "child" entry saying to look at the other entry to see spouse and children.) It means the person's line is split into two parts - one part up to their birth, and the other from marriage onwards.

I can't remember now if I had added the spouse by "find existing" or not.

Yes, KenSE is right - I have cousins married each other and used the Find Existing tab as described.

Yes you can.
When you add a spouse click on Find Existing and start typing the name.
Select the appropriate one from the list it displays.

On your family tree how do you get a relative to connect to the same ascendants if they marry within the same distant family ??
