Hello Carole. If you know when and where the marriage took place you could look from that year onwards. Put in the surname and the mothers maiden name. I can have a look for you if you like

It seems to me there are 2 likely Edward Henry Scotts:
Births Dec 1905 (>99%) Scott Edward Henry Stoke T. 6b 200
Births Sep 1915 (>99%) Scott Edward H Poole Wolstanton 6b 260
If you don't know his dad's name (either Alfred or Edward Henry) nor his age (which might be gotten from the GRO entry for his d.cert if you know when & where he died), then I think you'll need to buy a copy of his m.cert - I'm not familiar with army m.certs, but I presume that they contain this info, just like normal m.cers. You could buy the m.cert from the GRO with the details provided by KB above via: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
I favour the 1915 guy - it seems quite likely the Ed would name his son after his bro, but it's a bit of shaky guesswork to build a whole tree on.
One set of parents had several kids after 1911q3 (when the GRO index starts showing the mum's maiden surname) - the other had none.
Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page 1911q3 SCOTT Sydney Poole Wolstanton 6b 318 1915q3 Scott Edward H Poole Wolstanton 6b 260 1918q1 SCOTT Hilda Poole Wolstanton 6b 178 1920q2 Scott Joan D Poole Wolstanton 6b 316 1921q4 Scott Percy G D Poole Wolstanton 6b 257 1923q3 Scott Joan Poole Stoke T. 6b 213
Deaths Sep 1921 (>99%) Scott Joan 1 Stoke T 6b 145
These were found via a search at http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ In almost any hit, there's a couple of embedded links - the RD (Stoke above) and the page # - clicking on the latter gets all the other names that index that page. One routinely does this for marr hits, as the spouse should index to the same page - but since there's usuaaly 2 or 4 m.certs on the same page, so should the names of other couples. E.g.:
Marriages Sep 1903 (>99%) EDWARDS Sarah Ellen Wolstanton 6b 212 POOLE Emma Wolstanton 6b 212 SCOTT Edward Henry Wolstanton 6b 212 WARRILOW Edward Wolstanton 6b 212
Here's Ed's 1st marr - got a thing for Emma's

Here's the marr for your other potential grandad:

Now the GRO isn't the only place I can buy regular BMD certs. I can also buy them from the Register office that now holds the regos for the subdistrict or church where the event occurred. (I can even buy m.certs from the church involved if the entry's in the current rego book.). Some local indexes are online - see: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd Of relevance here - http://www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk/
It's always worth checking a local index if one is available - the local ref contains information abt the subdistrict/church where the event took place - StaffsBMD decode this for you - sometimes it's possible to guess, like even if BUR wasn't decoded, Burslem is a reasonable guess, but guessing C30 is Wolstanton, St Margaret is really hard to figure, although the C prefix is often used for C of E churches (and J or S for synagogues, and Q or F for Quaker meeting houses, and RO for the registra's own rego, so pre-1898 a rego office or non-conformist marr). The 2nd item in a local ref is the rego # for that subdistrict/church, and the last item is a page # or entry # - for these births, it's a page # - they never go above 100, although there's 500 entries in every rego (at 5 per page for Bs/Ds & 2 per page for Ms). However, the Ms are entry #s, so one can tell who wed whom.

But the usefulness of local indexes doesn't end there. They can contain identifying info that's not in the GRO index (at least not at the time).

Actually, this index originally didn't have the mum's maiden surnames, and they're being retro-fitted, subdistrict by subdistrict - if one checks their update pages, one regularly sees stuff like: 17 February 2014 Births: Replaced 7,522 for Tunstall, registers at Stoke-On-Trent (1882-1928) for corrections and to add mother's maiden names

Carole - I had some older stuff on the families but it was getting a bit remote from the kids you asked abt, so I didn't post it. However, it's done, so even if you have most of it, maybe there's something of value there.
I'm now assuming the 1915 Ed is the one of interest. Earlier I posted Alf's 1911 twice, and missed Ed's - I've fixed this now.

Just thinking, it's a standard PC thing, but some folk are unaware. Suppose I've got a list of files or dates or whatever (dates on StaffsBMD is the one that triggered this). Suppose I want to highlight one - I click on it - if I change my choice, I click on the new pick and the old one is deseleccted (sort of like radio buttons). Now suppose I want a contiguous block, like 1861-1891. I click on 1861, scrll doen to 1891, hold the shift key down, and click on 1891. If I just wanted 1861 & 1891, and nothing in between, I click on 1861, scroll to 1891, hold down the ctrl key and click on 1891. This is really of more use if I want to select some files to copy or delete, but not a block of them, or some counties to search, like Cornwall & Devon - there seems little point in including the intermediate counties of Cumberland & Derbyshire.
