1901 Census in Derbyshire

George Marwood, age 48, newsagent.

The transcriber has given his place of birth as Lancashire Durham.

The place of birth is Easington Lane, Durham.

They have the same mistranscription on Ancestry. The original clearly reads Easington Lane, Durham.

I've finally worked out how to send a message and I've sent another one about a transcription error regarding William Bunton.

GR don't make it easy to send a message, do they!

Do be aware that GR has not done its own transcriptions of censuses ................. it uses transcriptions done by its sister site findmypast.


This means that GR cannot in fact make any changes .................. fmp has to be notified, then that site has to make the change.


But also note that in most cases the transcription is not changed ................. the correct information is added as "Added Information".

Well they have for my badly transcribed family names, where I have submitted corrections

I've only ever done it on ancestry, and they don't change the record, but add the Additional Information, so you can find the record any which way


as in the case of the Hayhurst family on the 1851 Census, transcribed as Porst .................

Yes my Ancestry ones are like that....There is no point in showing a FMP one as I cannot remember what it said before....just that only 2 of the 7 letters were correct at the time I seem to remember

The way that the word Lane has been written, it is perfectly understandable why the transcriber would have taken it to be Lancs.

I have submitted a correction to FMP. If they agree that it needs amending, you will find that it filters through eventually to the GR records.

FMP DO change the records, unlike Ancestry

GR do NOT do any work on records; they simply use FMP's

Ancestry have been known to change records, but it is very rare.

I have over the years submitted hundreds of corrections to FMP, Ancestry and FreeBMD.

I even submitted amendments that were not even part of my own research, as when trawling through records, noticing something truly odd, I would check it out and if the original page was clearly mis-transcribed I would submit an amendment,

Oh just thought, wonder if Tesco's have ever heard that phrase in full, if so why are they using the shortened version for their promotions....... :-S
