I think it's a good idea to summarise information received form original question in a thread . A paragraph could be useful but if you put it at "end " of a thread it might be lost in subsequent postings ..if people have used quick search they may not want to plough thru long threads with lots of families which are irrelevent to them .What about adding an UPDATE edit to start of long threads ?

I have been told not to edit posts in past but think this is just not to delete or amend info that people have replied to What are your opinions . .

Some people add "Update" together with the date of the new post to the Title but I think for a summary post that is a bit confusing. "Summary" would perhaps be a better term.

Not sure it is a good idea as how many would actually bother to do it.

Not necesssity for everyone to do it . But for some of us it's helpful .a thread about my gggrandma Charlotte got very long + convoluted with adoptive family , birth father many generations + spouses families so it was helpful that Alisoun gave an update threads to cross reference added to original thread as an .UPdate
think Potty is right Summary is a better term .

If several people have contributed - who will 'take ownership' and feel that they should summarise everything?

Yes, in some instances when the OPer has got confused, it would be useful, but only if one or two other members have been working together through out the process.

Oh I meant for the OP to do it . summarising the answer to their original q. not everything on the post
sometimes members do summarise posts or ask for clarification in a nice summarising way .
I've just done it ;at end of my sisters post but will get her to add anote ..".see summary on page 5"

The best thing anyone can do is to read any threads they are posting before doing so.

Ensuring your thread is concise and to the point.

Sometimes we all get a bit carried away with informatiom overload and put far to much in a thread when asking for help.

Just remember this acronym K.I.S.S. (Keep it Simple, Stupid) which was originally used by computer programmers. Because it is so easy to get carried away.

IE When asking for help looking for a marriage. Name the Groom, the Bride, their approximate ages, area where marriage took place (if known) and at a push the fathers names. It is not necessary to write a long thread giving lots of surplus info, it can be very confusing.

And I have in the past found, that reading through a thread asking for help that I have written, I have in fact answered my own query in my long winded explanation :-S

I often look at genes on my Ipad you cant reload or update on that so looking in later I find other posts that have gone in before my twopenny worth

Means too whilst I have been off searching every which way others may have found info on family members I decided to look for as couldnt find the originals.

NO way am I going to plow through and summerise what I see as the sequence on any thread

We all try to help . Yes maybe there are double postings from different helpers but surely its the responsibility of the enquirer to sift through the kind info posted and sort t all out
