BMD, Reg & Cen are the three components of GEN.

http://freeukgen.rootsweb.com/

A while back I transcribed one of the 1861 films for Kent, which was posted to me on a cd. (I chose Kent as one of my lines was from that county)

This from FreeREG:-
Once you have found a record, always make a point of looking at the actual register on microfiche/film at a County Record Office or the local Family History Society or LDS family History Centre for confirmation.

Sadly, many folk don't - they just take info from someone else's tree at face value.

I do indexing for FreeReg and FamilySearch,
For a beginner, FreeReg is good as if you join a transcribers group you will always have support and can ask for advice; also there is a huge difference in the difficulty of records to be transcribed. You can start with easier files and go on to more difficult ones as you gain confidence and experience.
The trouble with FamilySearch transcribing is that there is very little in the way of help, you are very much on your own. Their instructions are a bit hard to follow too on occasions. And as you say, there are very few English records and I don't really find doing American records very interesting - but that's just me!
I would recommend FreeReg, if you look at the website home page and click on 'how to volunteer', you will find the links for e-mailing the co-ordinators of the areas which interest you.

Has anyone done any indexing for eg Family search,Freecen, etc.How easy was it to learn how to do it ? I have done some UK records on Family search but there are very few UK records on the indexing programme now and I would like to try some more indexing especially if the data will be freely available when indexed
