Thanks a million everybody for your advice....Given my brother and I a few good suggestions.....My brother went to London,,found the address off the Strand and it still is a silversmiths after all these years...The people in the shop didn't know the history of it but if we find anything could they please have a copy of what we produce... It is just a small family concern even now....Kind regards to all,,especially Chris....LES...

Are either of these two linked to your tree? Their Probate is on Ancestry, let me know if you want the info. The date is the probate date.

Moses Lewin Levin
1885 31 Mar 1885 Middlesex, England

Moses Levin
1886 29 Aug 1886 Norwich, Norfolk, England

***EDIT*** I never thought that Moses Levin would be such a common name, there are quite a few of them so probably yhr two probates are not related to you at all. The Norwich one drowned a aboatin that sank in the river Yare, Norfolk

I do have a line of Clockmakers and have found that the description used for their trade can vary.

If googling try their name and then Clockmaker or Watchmaker or Goldsmith or Silversmith or Jeweller!

For example... "moses levin" watchmaker.... brings up

If I ever have a spare £35000 I will be off to buy a Grandfather clock made by my 7xGGrandfather that is for sale:-( Some hope but I can dream :-D

In 'Old Clocks and Watches and their Makers' he is listed as Moses Levin.

(just seen they are moving, used to be a nice day there, incorporated with Guildhall 'look up's!)

Try googling "Clockmakers Company" as watchmakers would probably be affiliated to that.

Would it be worth contacting the Guildhall? Failing that the London Metropolitan Archives who now appear to hold most of the Guildhall records.

Good morning all...trying to trace information on my 2X Great grandfather Moss Levin..He was a Russian/Polish jew arrived Port of London about 1780/5 with his parents...He lived at Richmond in Surrey till death in 1842..I'm interested in his trade..He is listed in a trade directory as a Watchmaker /Silversmith of 7 Cooks Court Carey St London WC2...This seems as though he had his own business but not his own silver mark...Has anyone suggestions where I can find out more detail??? Thank you for your kind assistance.....Regards....LES.
