hi i have a query can anyone tell me what the following code means

albert phillips qbad/247/1

albert phillips qbad/247/3

does this mean albert senior and albert phillips junior ? if so would no 2 either have passed away or live somewhere else

Assuming you're talking about England and Wales, You must mean the electoral roll, not a census. Are the images on line so we can have a look in context?
We'd need more info to find them.

Those look a bit like National Identity Card numbers. When it first started families were registered together, and the head was /1, then /2 etc. So in the above example,

QBAD 247/1 is Albert Phillips, father.
QBAD 247/2 is the mother
QBAD 247/3 is Albert, the eldest child etc etc.

The numbers were later used as NHS numbers

Hmm- you could be right about that Andysmum, but ID cards were before my time.

Our offspring, born different years and districts, have the same NI numbers but with a different end letter. It might be a coincidence, but probably not.

I know that's how ID numbers were done because mine is like that. I am /3. My sister, born during the war has a different number completely and so does my younger brother.

After ID cards were no longer required, and the numbers were used as NHS numbers (not NI numbers - they are quite different) the numbers were localised. My elder son, born in 1961, has the letters PMMH, standing for Pymmes Park Middlesex Hospital, followed by the number of his entry in the Births Register.

NI numbers, originally issued when you started work and had to pay NI contributions, are 2 letters, 6 figures and a final letter which indicates the quarter of the year when you registered. I think they are now issued at birth, so NHS numbers are no longer required.

Seems to put paid to my theory!

How old are they? And are we talking about England and Wales? Because, as mentioned by DetEcTive, there wasn't a census in the UK in 1945, and even if there had been it's not available to the public yet.

Never mind Andysmum - it made sense at the time.

The Phillips are listed about half way down in the right hand column
2 Windsor Street.

Some other entries on the page have similar letters & number combitations after their names, but the vast majority don't.

It might be worth emailing Birmingham archive to unwrap this mystery. If you do, please let us know what they advise.

Not too sure if it is a Birmingham ER now ArgyllGran. I was too hasty posting, but if the letter part of the code is anything to go by, it could be.

The one I was looking at had the code
QBAD/81/1
QBAD/81/3

Mind you, I think there were 2 ERs in 1945, so perhaps you are looking at 'the other one'.

Didn't this come up some months ago? It turned out to be something to do with members of the armed forces needing to be on another register in case they were away on duty at the time of an election.

I tried searching for such a thread but can't get advanced search to give any results.

Bob, thank you but I don't know the area at all. The maternity dept. at the North Middlesex Hospital covered a huge area and I was actually living at New Southgate at the time.

I am fairly sure the code is the National Identity Number. The initial allocation was based on an address with normally /1 for the head /2 for the spouse and /3 onwards for the children. After the initiall registration, new registrations had a unique seven character code without the /.

The identity number on the electoral roll would have been used for those on more than one electoral roll. That would have made it easy to ensure that an individual did not vote more than once in a general election. Voting in more than one local election was allowed.
