Prior to 1837 you're relying on parish records. Whether or not the records you're looking for are online yet depends on the parish you're interested in. Most of the transcriptions are being done by volunteers working at their own pace. |

if you are looking for baptisms, marriages or burials, see if there are Online Parish Records for the county of interest. |

They have a selection of Parish Registers and lots of newspapers which are pre 1831. |
