Thanks Kay, I am relying on info from other family trees but they seem correct as one of the sons has Hiscock as a middle name. All cannings is not a very big place and my husbands family John Griffin 1817 was baptised there along with most of the family. It is odd that Virtue (Vertu) seems to disappear as well. My husbands father said that the family came from Ireland. It is Johns eldest son that carries the Hiscock name. |

Can you say how you know that the mother's birth name was Hiscock? |

I guess the Virtue Hiscock born All Cannings 1793 must be yours? Makes it likely that they married there, assuming they married at all of course! |

John Griffin born 1817 All Cannings Devizes Baptised 9.2.1817 father Patrick Griffin c1795 on baptism record (soldier serving in Ireland) mother Virtue (Hiscock) wife and mother resident here. Also found marriage untraceable in All Cannings. John appears to be only child. I am trying to find out if Patrick was from Ireland as record says mother resident here, or if he was English and serving in Ireland. I haven't found a death record in the area of All Cannings but both Hiscocks and Griffins from John down seem to all come from that area . |

Thanks for information I have been looking everywhere for a way to get back further but it seems from before the birth father was supposed to be Irish mother English. The father does not appear on any census records but at child birth states he was a soldier in Ireland at the time. Cant find any death record for him either so perhaps my journey looking back has come to an end. |

You'll have to rely on Parish Records - https://familysearch.org/ is quite a good free site. |

How can I find a birth certificate of someone born in 1817. I want to trace back from this date but the father could of been born Ireland so until I get a certificate I will not know. |
