I think the age of son James in that 1851 census on the image is really 1 ½ not 11.
This is that household in Liverpool in 1861
Patrick Clark 40 Margaret Clark 35 says born Ireland James Clark 12 Bridget Clark 8 Martin Clark 4 Mary Clark 2
and that doesn't fit the names Rosezina gave:
James 1848 George 1852 Joseph 1858 Ann 1859
so I think that's the wrong people in 1851 unfortunately
Rosezina have you identified the births of any of the children and would a birth certificate not tell you Margaret's surname for sure in that case?
Births Dec 1852 ? Clarke George Liverpool 8b 50

Patrick is considerably older than Margaret
is it likely that this was a second marriage for him and the elder two children, for example, were from his first marriage?
or were Margaret's children before the marriage possibly
if that is Margaret with mother Sarah in 1841, and she had a brother and son named James, it makes sense that her father was James
here is the birth of a Mary Basson to parents James and Sarah in Whitehaven in 1820 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NYRB-548
very possibly the birth of the James who was 2 in the 1841 household
Births Mar 1839 Basson James Thomas Liverpool 20 341
and the death of the father
Deaths Dec 1840 BASSON James West Derby 20 745
just as possible confirmation of Margaret's surname
maybe Rosezina you can say why you believe it to be Basson :-)

Thanks for the searches, the name Basson is recorded as her maiden name on a few of the children's Catholic baptism records. On an 1861 census from Ancestry her brother James Basson is living with her and Patrick. I also found another Liverpool census for 1861 that has. A Patrick Clarke from Ireland, and William Basson a mariner, from Whitehaven,, aged 52, which could be Margaret's father, and may be Patrick was just a visitor even though the census says he was a lodger.. Both streets were in same area..

that's the right find I would say ... I did run into that William while scouring the censuses for Bassons born in Whitehaven but didn't have the wit to notice the Patrick Clarke in the household
although that Patrick Clarke was a dock labourer and your Patrick Clarke is accounted for in 1861 as a ship keeper so that seems a coincidence only ... although Patrick could have been temporarily absent and counted both places
1861
Name: William Basson Age: 51 Estimated birth year: 1810 Relation: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Whitehaven occupation mariner
Name: Patrick Clarke Age: 50 Estimated birth year: 1811 Relation: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Ireland occupation dock labourer
Civil Parish: Liverpool Ecclesiastical parish: St Martin County/Island: Lancashire
1851
Name: William Basson Age: 60 ....... I think it really says 40 Estimated birth year: abt 1791 Relation: Lodger Where born: Sunderland; Whitehaven Civil Parish: Liverpool Town: Liverpool County/Island: Lancashire occupation mariner
widower in both censuses
if William was at sea in 1841 he would not have been enumerated I think
possibly Sarah died in childbirth and child also died?
Births Jun 1849 BASSON Sarah Liverpool 20 274
Deaths Jun 1849 Basson Sarah Liverpool 20 186 Basson Sarah Liverpool 20 208
this is rather interesting
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NNSS-L9K
Name: Michael Clark Spouse's Name: Mary Basson Event Date: 07 Mar 1865 Event Place: Liverpool, Lancaster, England Father's Name: Patrick Clark Spouse's Father's Name: William Basson Marital Status: Single Spouse's Marital Status: Single
it would be interesting to see the father's occupations on the certificate:
Marriages Mar 1865 Basson Mary Liverpool 8b 286 Clark Michael Liverpool 8b 286
this looks like it could be that Mary Basson in 1851
Name: Mary Basson Age: 8 Estimated birth year: abt 1843 Relation: Scholar (Institutional) Gender: Female Where born: Liverpool, Lancashire, England Civil Parish: Walton on the Hill County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Registration district: West Derby ED, institution, or vessel: Industrial Schools belonging to the Parish of Liverpool
this is that couple in 1871
Michael Clark 32 born Ireland hay ricker Mary Clark 30 born Liverpool Eliza Clark 4 Maria Clark 1
wondering whether she could be a child of William and Sarah whom William could not care for when Sarah died
Births Sep 1841 Basson Mary Liverpool 20 276
and could Michael be a son of your Patrick from a previous marriage?
yes of course, here is the 1861 census you referred to with Margaret's brother James in the household
Patrick Clark 50 Margaret Clark 31 James Clark 13 George Clark 9 Ann Clark 2 Joseph Clark 3 Philip Clark 36 widowed brother of Patrick Phipip Clark 7 (son of Philip presumably) Michael Clark 20 ......... son but obviously not Margaret's son James Bassan 21
so Margaret's sister Mary Basson married Margaret's husband Patrick's son Michael Clark?

I'm afraid that 1851 entry is for Margaret Benson, born Cartmel
The image is quite clear on FMP

Thank you for all the searches, briliant work,! The Clarke puzze is slowly coming together. It looks like Patrick may have been married previously, I did wonder myself about Michael Clarke being too old to be Margaret's son. The Basson's are interesting to say the least. I have another "Clarke", brickwall , I was up till 3am trying to locate my x4 great grand father's marriage record without success.
Philip Clarke born 1809-1811 - Ireland Catherine Soraghan/Sorahan/Sorahon, born 1821-1823 - Ireland. (maiden name extracted from various Liverpool Catholic baptism records)
Their eldest child is probably Andrew born Ireland abt 1845, and a subsequent children were all born in Liverpool from about 1848, I can find no marriage records on FMP, Familysearch or Ancestry, or even rootsireland.ie. Not sure of the townland or county but going by name distribution lists, looks like Cavan, Meath, Louth are a possibilty.

Many thanks, JoonieCloonie and Jacqueline.
Yes, the Clarkes keep on coming! And they have all followed the Irish custom of naming their sons after their grandparents, so all I see is a continual repition of the same names!

it's what led to me figuring out who Michael Clark was (son of Margaret's husband Patrick from his previous marriage) and who Mary Basson probably was (sister of Margaret) :-)
