it could also mean that the child was actually illegitimate and the father's name was omitted if he was not present. The child could then have been reregistered at a later date with the same name but the father's name added to the certificate. |

I think it should mean that the child was registered first, and then at a later date was adopted, and the amendment added. |

Thank you so much. As the informant was a police officer, well used to getting dates, names and places correct, I guess adoption was the correct option. But- supplementary here - does that mean that the child as registered had been adopted, or that he was put up for adoption after birth? |

The suffix /s sometimes means that the child has been adopted. |

The significance is that the original entry was corrected or amended at a later date. The page with the 's' indexes to the amendment which appears as a new entry in the actual register, and hence on a later page. |

A birth record in free BMD gives the page number but this has been crossed out and a different page number inserted, with the suffix /S. Can anyone please explain the significance of this? |
