Thank you all for your help. I have now ordered a death certificate to see if it solves my query.

He might well have been moved to a different location.

The blackkalender link does say he was suffering from 'organic dementia'. By 1961, 6/7 years after his sentence, the disease may have progressed to the point were he was no longer considered a threat to society.

As Shirley says, I think it would be best to order the certificate- this will then give details of his address (or institution) and the person who registered it.

He was found guilty, but insane. The articles I see in the paper don't make it clear where he was sent- although this link does say Broadmoor:

I'm just wondering if it was a different institution that you visited, perhaps he was transferred closer to home?

Austin,

I did visit him in Broadmoor when i was little lots of times.
I do remember is funeral in Victoria Road.

I did live with my grandparents at 404 until they both died.

Oh, right- I see there is some confusion. I only see Bertram on the Birmingham Electoral register until 1952- possibly 1955 living at 404 Victoria Road. After this (at least until 1965), his son Bertram Samuel is listed as living there.

I have now just seen newspaper articles that may explain this- in April 1954 he was charged with murdering Mrs Ann Emms (who was separated from her husband and had been living with Bertram).

I'll see what else I can find.

If he died in broadmoor one would expect a member of staff would have reg the death .

The only way to find info will be to get that Birmingham death certificate

Index (original) definitely states Birmingham:

Name: Bertram Chaplin
Birth Date: abt 1879
Date of Registration: Jun 1961
Age at Death: 82
Registration district: Birmingham
Inferred County: Warwickshire
Volume: 9c Page: 42

What record do you have that states he died in Broadmoor?

The name was Bertram Chaplin...

We do not have death certificate. Thats why we need the district.
Unable to find any information even though it was 1961

Hi Susan, what was the name?

Do you have the death certificate? Or could it be an error in the index transcription?

Was the record you were looking at a death record or a burial record?

If he died in Broadmoor I would expect the death to be registered in a Berkshire registration district.

Hello Susan.
I would think if the persons funeral was in Birmingham that is what the record will state .

One of my family died in Broadmoor in 1961 and have a question.

They came back to Birmingham for funeral.

On the records it states Birmingham as district not Berkshire...
It is right ????
