As yet I only have my tree on Ancestry and done nothing with regard to saving it on a stick (whatever that is) etc.

I am computer illiterate but my OH will do the necessary. Any advice for him will be most gratefully received.

Don't think you can save it on a memory stick from ancestry .what you can do is to download it from there on a gedcom file and upload it onto a tree file like FTM or one of the free ones like Legacy

I have done mine the other way around ie I have it on a Famliy Tree Maker and uploaded it to ancestry . When I bought a new laptop and bought the later FTM edition I downloaded the file back to it from Ancestry . I then saved the current one to a memory stick from my PC .
You need to save your ancestry tree to your PC because if you stop subscribing to ancestry then all your work will be unavailable

Certainly down-load it to your computer as a gedcom, then save again to your memory stick.

As Shirley says, unless you have a family history programme on your computer it would look like gobbledy-gook if you opened it. Some people say you can make some sense of a gedcom if you open it in word or notepad. It won't be in the format you're used to.

Although I've never let my Ancestry sub lapse, isn't it possible to view your tree and profile pages as a 'free' member? You certainly won't be able to view the associated records you've attached.

It is well worth getting a late version of FTM and synching it with your Ancestry Tree. That way you get the records transferred as well as Shirley has done.

GEDCOMs are very limited being text files only. Any photos or records in your tree have to be downloaded and saved separately.

Even if you do have a family tree program on your PC you need to back up the information from time to time.
