Did wonder if it was - I've been taking a chain-saw to my main tree, so too late to look now. wonder if it will crash in 'the morning'??

Probably lol, so I thought I'd just look at some obvious ones tonight. :-)

Going to spend a day looking for for family and friend, its great found some already, will keep me busy.

It's great that you can view the 1939 tegister on subscription rather than credits.Hopefully they will incorporate that eventually into the monthly subscription rather than an annual as you can dip in and out of it as you want instead of being forced into an annual one.

It's working fine for me - thus far!
I don't like what I see though and have submitted several corrections for just one household of four people. The image is clear enough!
This was the first household that I have viewed but I suspect I will find more errors if the previously unlocked records are anything to go by.
The team are going to be busy!

Have just checked my grandparents entries -

1. Before it was open, my aunt was with them as she was born 1915, but who I presumed was my father, was closed as he was born 1917. I can link the note that Grandad was an ARP warden to pictures that I have.

Now I can see the record, so either it's OK to open now Dad would be 99 years old (January birthday) or they have discovered he died over 20 years ago !!

2. The other set had 2 closed entries. Again a 1917 uncle who would be 99, but died several years ago is now open, but they haven't opened up the entry that I presume is my Mum b 1920, but died 5 years ago. Interesting to see that this Grandpa was a Special Constable. I never met this set of grandparents as they both died before I was born and didn't know that.

And another uncle is now listed, - before, I couldn't find his record.

So maybe it is getting updated as time goes on, which can only be good news. Onwards !!

They did say they were gradually updating the records to include those whose death in on the GRO index. Its good to read that it is actually happening.

One thing I've noticed regards the date next to an updated name showing a woman's married name. As I've the gro index for the ones I've looked at, its obvious the noted date is when the record was altered, not when they married.

The (image) wheel is grinding exceedingly slow. Time to do some chores :-(

I have found a few interesting snippets, one being that my uncle and aunt had two school boys living with them, from Liverpool as far as I can gather, so I assume they were evacuees.

i have been trying to hold my self back from paying the world £155 a year subs
just to look at the 39 census.

but i want to look at just about every one in close family
i just no im going to have to pay as im to nose not to

plus i want to tell them about my nanna close record that should be open
as she was born in 1892 and died in 1978
and grandpops who died in WW2

Shelly, you don't need the World Sub to view the 1939 reg, you can see it with the Britain Sub which is £88+.

I've had to submit corrections for most of the records that I've viewed today. Omissions which are legit and on the image, wrong person hidden, wrong person open, neighbours transcribed into each others households.....
I hope others are having better results.

One thing I found is female relatives under their married name rather than their maiden name as they were not married at the time of the registers.

Is there a link for the 'other occupations' initials, the ones shown on the adjacent page?

ARP - air raid warden. What about some of the others or those which appear to be related to their employer?

My uncle and aunt are closed .... he was born 1894, and she was born 1897 BUT they both died in Australia so no GRO entry for them

I'm not about to pay for 2 Australian death certificates ......... maybe one or other of their English grandchildren will do it

I've also found that, BUT they do appear with their family or first husband on the Register ........ it's only on the transcript that they are listed under their later marriage name.

Of course, the 1939 Register was used as the basis for the NHS list in 1947, and updated regularly through to about 1991/1992.

My brother and a maternal uncle are both open although one was born in 1925 and the other in 1929 ............ one died in 1990 and the other in 1991.

As I've mentioned on another thread, Dad 1923-2006 has been opened, but not Mum 1919-2003. Mind you, his surname is towards the beginning of the alphabet, and her's towards the end.

Its worth looking for someone born 1915+, died 1991+ just in case. A couple of twigs have unexpectedly shown up even though they died in this century after 2006.
